Jacksonville International Airport (JIA) South Access Road – Jacksonville, Florida
In September 2002, the Florida Department of Transportation began this $17 million project to build a new connector road to the terminal area from I-295 and Duval Road, and an overpass at Airport Road. This new road provides an additional route to the airport for all travelers and will assist the commercial users of the distribution facilities adjacent to JIA. This project was let for construction in 2002 and completed in April 2004.
Connelly & Wicker was contracted by the Florida Department of Transportation to provide engineering services for this new 4-lane alignment. The project length was 1.7 miles and included a bridge over Pickett Branch. Scope of services included roadway & drainage, signing & pavement marking, lighting, irrigation and landscape design. This new 4-lane rural roadway is to serve as the south access road to the Jacksonville International Airport from I-295. The stormwater management system utilized 15-foot wide grass shoulders to provide the stormwater treatment and the attenuation was accomplished in the roadside ditches, which eliminated the need for stormwater detention ponds.
